Atlanta GA or Chattanooga TN at 0600 on Sat. Morning?

Hello, neighbors,

We will be traveling from southwestern Virginia to Destin, Florida this coming weekend. Traveling with two very young grandchildren, we plan on leaving at midnight and driving while they (hopefully!) sleep. One route takes us through Chattanooga TN, the other through Atlanta GA. I don't know much about Chattanooga, but I know Atlanta traffic can be a real bear. Is traveling the interstate through either city likely to be troublesome at about 6 o'clock on a Saturday morning, though? Any other considerations I should take into account on either route?

Thanks very much!
Regan
  • Been thru both going north from Florida. Chattanooga was fine about 0930 on. It is pretty straight forward especially if you have GPS to keep you in the right lanes.
Atlanta we have gone thru 2x once on Sat. early and once on a Sunday about 1000am. Both time traffic was steady but light with no hang ups. This was thru the middle. You can always drive in the HOV lanes as well.
  • At 6 AM on a Saturday I would not worry about Atlanta. I would however worry about visibility thru the mountains around Chattanooga. Last time we were thru there, there was fog until about 10 AM at the higher elevations.
  • Atlanta= Saturday should be no problem. If you are on the west side on 285 the road surface can be rough and you may run into some construction- but even at that at 6AM should not be a problem.

I suggest you check Georgia Navigator -- GA 511 for any incidents/construction to plan your route- or call GA 511.

    Chattanooga never a problem.
