Aurora alert -- March 17-18 solar storm

All of you lucky folks in the Far North probably already know this -- but a big solar flare hit the Earth this morning, and the aurora should be very active for the next 36 hours or so. As usual, I will have to wait for someone else's photos to be able to see it, but I can only imagine what it would be like to be out on a wide open prairie, surrounded by those colors. Sort of like taking a bath in a rainbow!

    With cloudy skies around Whitehorse last night, I drove to Carmacks to catch the show - well worth the 11-hour, 493-km trip :)

    If you all huff and puff and blow our overcast away, we might be able to see them. As it is, the clouds take on a green glow.

    It is apparently happening as far south as Florida and overhead for most of the continent. It hit before sunrise this morning, it's just a pity that this happened in daylight for most of us. It is at a kp=8 level which is just one point short of the very maximum it can be. I can only hope that this level will last for just a few more hours, very doubtful though!


    This was from Alaska this morning, but there are similar images from the lower 48!
