Mapquest takes me through Nashville & Atlanta from St. Louis to Jekel Island, GA and St. Augustine, FL. I really would like to avoid those 2 cities. Anyone with any suggestions? Usually go through Memphis to go to Gulf Shores, AL, but trying a different area this year.

When I had south from Illinois/Wisconsin border I go thru Atlanta and Nashville all the time.It's all relevant. I am from Chicago and when I inquired about going thru these 2 towns I heard all the horror stories.Trust me if you've been thru or around Chicago both of these cities are a walk in the park! :BLike any city it makes for a more pleasant drive if you do not go thru during rush hour times.Nashville doesn't doesn't have enough road for the traffic so if you go thru during rush you will end up sitting stuck in traffic as the roads merge in. Try and time that city avoiding rush.Atlanta, I use the southern by-pass route.I would be more concerned with the 7% grade in Chattanooga. I did that ONCE and NEVER EVER again.I take 65 south out of Nashville to Birmingham and then east on 20 to 75 this puts you outside Atlanta for easy on to continue south on 75. Thereby avoiding the dreaded drop off in Chattanooga!:WYa a couple of miles more but a VERY pleasant stress free drive in an RV.:C

Do a search for either town and read on. We take the Atlanta bypass and go thru Nashville.

Go right thru Atlanta , non rush hour ,. no problem .

I have been around Nashville - a nightmare - though I will admit it was rush hour. I have been in Atlanta a few times and will never ever take the bypass - we did that once not rush hour and a nightmare - we have driven through Atlanta non-rush hour and was hectic, but ok -- but really want to avoid those towns.

No there is not any good way to avoid those two for where you are going. I-40 to Asheville is not that good of a route plus it's over 110 miles further.I go straight through Atlanta all the time on I-75 but not at rush hour. Do not stay in the right lane as it will become an exit... even the two right lanes at I-285 (do not use) on the north side and downtown for I-20.Have to admit that a GPS is handy for getting through Nashville on I-24 so you know which side of the road to be on. It's more complicated than going through Atl.
