Avoiding Atlanta and Nashville?

Hit Nashville between 9AM-3PM or 7PM-5AM and traffic is not bad. Check the TDOT SMARTWAY site for incidents and traffic.

If you are coming in on I-24 from the west, you can pick up Briley Parkway (SR 155) on the north side of Nashville, take it east to I-40. Take I-40 east to SR 840 (great road), get on 840 WEST (although it's really more straight south) and get back on I-24. It will be about 10 miles further but will avoid lots of traffic. Take a good look at a road map and the route will make sense.

I drive to Florida from Kentucky just about every year and drive through both cities. Going down I am hitting Nashville in the early am about 7 to 9 am and through Atlanta right around lunch time and have no problem.

One the way back I spend the night just south of Atlanta and drive through the early AM and hit Nashville in the early afternoon, again no problem.

I believe the afternoons both cities get busy and especially Atlanta, I try to time going straight through in the mornings only.

I cannot help you out with Nashville. However, a very good route around Atlanta is US-27 South. Get off I-75 in Calhoun, Ga. and get on Ga. 53 to Rome. Go South to LaGrange and get on I-185 to Columbus. At Fort Benning get on US 280 to Richland. Go straight on Ga. 520 to Albany and get on US 82. US 82 will take you all the way to Jekyl. Great roads, very little traffic, all 4 lane, and mostly 65 mph. Very senic highway. If you are retired or active military you go right by Fort Benning and MCLB Albany. Fort Benning has a great campground. A little longer, but well worth the extra time.

Nashville is no problem if you know what lane to be in and that takes at least one drive through in each direction or a good look at a road map and a GPS. We go right through the middle of Atlanta regardless of time of day. We found the bypass to be worse than the direct route.

road grade over the ridge in Chattanooga is a piece of cake! Just take your time, and go right over. If you take I-24, more worrys about Monteagle pass than Chattanoogo. If you get over Monteagle, Chatanooga is flat! If you want real fun, go to Branson, MO!

Nashville is no problem, just avoie rush hours. Atlanta, take the bypass around, or non-rush hours, straight thru. Take the middle lane to avoid idiots getting on and off, act like you are king of the road, and allow plenty of time. Don't let anything push you. If you are in a class A. B, or C, you have your bathroom and kitchen on board. Stuck in traffic, make a sandwich!

No there is not any good way to avoid those two for where you are going. I-40 to Asheville is not that good of a route plus it's over 110 miles further.
I go straight through Atlanta all the time on I-75 but not at rush hour. Do not stay in the right lane as it will become an exit... even the two right lanes at I-285 (do not use) on the north side and downtown for I-20.
Have to admit that a GPS is handy for getting through Nashville on I-24 so you know which side of the road to be on. It's more complicated than going through Atl.

I have been around Nashville - a nightmare - though I will admit it was rush hour. I have been in Atlanta a few times and will never ever take the bypass - we did that once not rush hour and a nightmare - we have driven through Atlanta non-rush hour and was hectic, but ok -- but really want to avoid those towns.

Go right thru Atlanta , non rush hour ,. no problem .

Do a search for either town and read on. We take the Atlanta bypass and go thru Nashville.
