What I plan to do in a few weeks is to take US30 E/b from Joliet IL.
A few years ago, I drove west from Cleavland and took US 20 all the way to West Bend IN. I did not have to get on the turnpike at all in either state. Also, the scenery is much, much more interesting and I don't think I lost much, if any, time on that route.
On the toll roads, my impression is TREES AND TRUCKS! Not only that but with a MH towing, the tolls are horrible. I am taking 30 east and jogging up to Nappanee and then to Shipshiwana and then onto 20 E/B. I will get back on 80-90 just before Cleavland OH where the toll road ends.
