Avoiding Salt Lake City

No offence, but the last time I drove thru SLC, I felt like I was taking my life in my hands. I always keep a buffer zone and some lady in a little sports car pulled in front of me and then slammed on her breaks. Thank goodness I had good breaks and I bet I came an inch from her bumper. I've avoided SLC ever since. (I know that could happen on any freeway, but that happened to me on that freeway and, well you know) Would taking the 215 help any or is it just as bad. Heading to Brownsville from WA sometime next Spring. Thanks in advance
  • Why do avoid Utah?
Turn south at Twin Falls and take US 93 south to basically Tucson,AZ. Lot less traffic and easier drive.
  • SLC's construction is pretty much over. Went through in early October '13 midday, was just fine.
  • The only way to avoid SLC is to go through Nevada on US93. That's the way we go.
You could cut back towards I15 on US50 if you wish.
  • I've been going to SLC for 15 years on business, and never a problem. But there is an increasing amount of insurance fraud everywhere, and I've heard of a similar situation involving a Class A in the past.

If you really want a hair raising driving experience, go visit Naples, Italy someday, where traffic lights are only a suggestion. Like being in a James Bond movie. :B
  • In all fairness, up until last year, there was so much construction between Ogden and Provo, that it made for a very long journey. This year, I went thru on Sunday and it was fine. Normally I will take off at Pocatello, and go over to Jackpot and then down to LV. It is the long way and only 2 lanes but take it easy and it isn't too bad of a drive. I would like to try the way that Mockturtle has mentioned and will one of these days. Macktee
  • Being from Seattle and having negotiated many a major city in a motorhome and toad, I can say that SLC is the WORST. Even in SoCal, drivers will allow you to change lanes. Not in SLC. Next time I go through UT, I will take I-84/I-80, US 40/189 to circumvent the whole mess.
  • IMO 215 isn't any better. But how long has been since you came though SLC? We have 5 and 6 lanes going though SLC now.
  • My son lives in SLC, and we visit at least twice a year. If you hit the 15 during non rush hour times, it's actually no better or worse than any other large city. It sounds like you just had an unfortunate incident.

The one thing that drives me crazy about the 15 though is it always seems to be under construction. I'm hoping when we go up there next month that most of the construction is done.
  • I've never noticed anything crazy in SLC... certainly not compared to other metro areas.

I have also spent quite a bit of time in the RGV and I would be far more concerned about Brownsville than SLC.
