AZ to Jackson Hole or West Yellowstone

What is the quickest easiest way to get to Jackson Hole, WY once I get on I-15 northbound in Utah?

I may go to West Yellowstone, MT instead. Do I go up I-15 to Idaho Falls and then take Hwy 20?

Is there an RV friendly route to Jackson Hole from Idaho Falls?

Beyond West Yellowstone, which is better to get up to I-90...Hwy 191 or 287? I'll be going west on I-90.
  • We have drove the route a few times and ALWAYS end up going up the wrong side of Flaming Gorge. I believe the GPS's give you a "trick" route in that region. You have been warned.
  • When we left jackson we took 26 to idaho falls. good road scenic and rv friendly. The road west 22 has a bad pull out of jackson.

    cant help ya with 20.

Even though it's 100 miles further to take 26 to 191 to Jackson Hole and W Ystone instead of 20 straight to W Ystone you get to see the Tetons. This will let you come in the south entrance of Ystone and Old Faith which will save you much of the extra miles as you tour Ystone.
Both 287 and 191 are good roads so 287 as it puts you further west.
  • I did the I-15 to 20 to West Yellowstone in 2012. Don't remember any problems.
  • The route that I like the best going North on I-15(and I have done several) is to get on US 89 just north of Ogden. Or you could go up to Brigham City and pick up US 89 there. I would have to look at a map to see the exit, but I-15 and US 89 gets real close together. 89 is scenic and goes by Bear Lake for a few miles.

X2 - We have used 89 up to Jackson twice with our Class C.

If you want to stay on I15 to Idaho Falls, take route 26 to Alpine Junction then go north to Jackson. Do not take route 22 over the Teton Pass. Been there, done that, never again.

Route 20 from Idaho Falls to West Yellowstone is an easy drive, but misses the Tetons, which would be a shame.

I agree that 89 is a very scenic route, BUT it has several high passes and steep decent's and it does not meet the two requirements above. And YES, do not take 22.

We used the later route going in 2010 from Tucson to Tetons/Yellowstone, not a bad route at all. This is at Exit 362 on US 91 to US 89. There is some climbing up and a steep decent down into Bear Lake. Not too hard of a climb or decent.

However, Google Maps has it routed off I-15 in Idaho, but before Pocatello, taking US 30 to Soda Springs, ID then ID 34 E (northward) to US 89 in WY. It is a little shorter in time than the Brigham City, but not much. No idea how the roads are however.

    226 mi, 3 hours 55 mins for I-15 N and ID-34 E & 211 mi, 4 hours 6 mins for the Brigham City US-89 N route.
