AZ... traveling from Lost Dutchman to Dead Horse state parks

We are heading back to Cottonwood from Apache Junction area. Didnt love the trip here which used major highways including the 101 and the 102... How's the route heading toward Payson using 87 and 2...

From what I remember,that is a pretty good road. Dead Horse Ranch State Park is a nice base from which to visit Jerome,Ft Verde and Tuzigoot.
