Baja California to Mazatlan

Thinking of taking a motorcycle down the Baja and ferry across to Mazatlan. Then maybe back a different way. Any suggestions?
  • You will have better luck getting a response on bajanomaddotcom. Will say road from Mazatlan to USA is mostly in bad shape, lots of potholes. Drove it a month ago.

^^^ thanks for your response ... when you say road from USA to Mazatlan is in bad shape are you referring to Mexican hwy 2/15?
  • OK, I have to jump in here.

I think it's a bit early to say that Hwy 15 is in bad shape. Yes, rainy season is over and there was damage, as there always is, during the summer. It's just a bit early for someone to say that the road is bad because, hey, has anyone driven it yet this fall/winter???

How about a report on actual condition someone?
  • I have driven it. The road sucks in Sinaloa.
Talley, do you think that the roads got repaired in a month?
    jajajaja
  • I have been driving Mexico Hwy 15 for over twenty years. I just drove the road a month ago. It is in the worst condition I have ever driven. That is one of the biggest challenges on here. If you post something that is not favorable towards Mexico, you always get negatively challenged. Even if your post is current. The OP will be riding a motorcycle and if he hits one of potholes that are large enough to cross two lanes he will likely to go down and get hurt. I say this with authority as I have ridden motorcycles for over 50 years and still ride. Also I hit one of those potholes with my motorhome. So hard I pulled over to check if I cracked one of my aluminum rims. Luckily I did not but did break a frame to body support which has been repaired. I call it as I see it.

  • In Sonora all of the roads are in bad shape. 15 to HMO is mostly OK. The problem is all the rain. With heat the asphalt cracks. Water enters the cracks and lo and behold becomes a pothole. Because there is little or very poor maintenance that pothole grows. The mine road had potholes that were about 3 ft. by 3 ft.. HMO has streets that are not passable. Again, all the rain is the problem. 15 is mostly toll road. There is no excuse for improper maintenance. One should also consider that many states do not have Government weigh scales. Trucks are loaded according to the amount of space without considering weight.
  • Thank you all for posting.

It's really nice to hear from people who have actually driven the roads recently, and not hearing the typical, "Oh, the roads suck, they always do and always have."

    Nothing like real reporting.

Thanks for the posts. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet but at least now if I go I have a little better idea of what to expect.
