Baja Travel Buddies

Looking to cross through Mexicali via El Centro the first week of December and most likely do a two week drive to the Cabo area and then a slow return on my own time schedule. I've done the Baja before plus two trips to the mainland - including Belize and Guatemala. If anybody is interested in some rudimentary travel knowledge on the trip down reply here or Private Message me. Thanks.

  • I have been watching BN and Expedition Portal and it looks like I may need to post there - but a little closer to my trip date. Since we have sold the DP and I will be driving down solo to meet the DW flying into SJD for a couple weeks of time-share, I thought I would be a bit more adventurous and take the MEX 5 to Bay of Gonzaga and Coco's Corner before I pick up the Mex 1. Almot, thanks for the info, I could take the ferry and then go back through San Felipe to see the darling daughter in Las Vegas on the return trip. Tallman

BN forum is occasionally down - was down some time this morning - but 99% of time it works.

Coloradotallman - I have a gut feeling that the only area where gathering a caravan might be justified, is few kilometers through Mexicali. Local cops have particularly bad reputation. On the "Baja Road" you don't really need a caravan, though might want to consider getting a satellite phone and a few numbers for local "mechanicos", just in case. You've been there, so you know how it looks. Hours of boredom, then a stretch of white knuckles drive on the lane barely 8ft wide with no shoulders, then boredom again.

Unless you "have" to be in places between Ensenada and Sta Rosalia, I would consider ferry from Guaymas to Sta Rosa. This will put you right in the middle of the peninsula, bypassing bad sections of the road. Though it can get expensive for big rigs, the ferry is charging by the foot.
  • I tried the Baja Nomad site many times and cannot connect. Anybody else having those problems? Thanks.

    edit to add....works fine now.
  • You might also post this on the Baja Nomads site, there are people looking for Baja caravan opportunities at times. JH
