Make sure you get the America the Beautiful Pass. It's now $80 but well worth it. Free admission to any National Park or Historic site and half price on camping at any federal campgrounds like National Parks, Forest service or Army Corps of Engineers (COE).On the southern route I would suggest the Grand Canyon and Cottonwood Arizona. We stayed at Dead Horse Ranch State Park and visited Tuzigoot, Jerome and Ft Verde. On the way back Yellowstone. We stayed at Madison Campground which is centrally located in the park. Yellowstone is huge, about the size of Rhode Island so staying in the park will save time. If you take I-80 through Nebraska, they have some nice state recreation area campgrounds.About $21 a night with electric. We really enjoyed Harold Warp's Pioneer Museum in Minden, Nebraska. If you like history, old cars ,trucks ,motorcycles or tractors, you'll love it. Iowa State Parks are very reasonable. In 2016,we stayed in Waubonsie State park. $`16 a night with electric. If going back east through Missouri,I would suggest taking State Rt 36 instead of I-70. It's 4 lane and 65mph. Less traffic than 70. There are 2 nice Missouri State Park Campgrounds along 36. We stayed at Pershing. It was $21 a night with electric. Long Branch Sate Park is further east but right of 36.
