Road construction of some sort is nearly inevitable when driving across New England if it's not winter. I'm not aware of any really major construction activities along US2 at present.
US2 is fine for pretty much any vehicle; it's an important route used by trucks, for instance. I've traveled (by car) a reasonable portion of it this summer, from eastern ME through, and don't remember anything at all unexpected or untoward along it.
I would suggest you may want to take I-89 from Montpelier or so, where it and US2 are very closely aligned. The scenery is essentially the same, and the interstate is generally easier going.
