We've done route 2 from Rumford to Bangor in Maine. That section is primarily 2 lane and goes through a fair number of towns where the speed limits drop to 30 or even 25. It's not a bad road, just don't be in a hurry. Watch trip routing carefully as you do have to make some turns in order to stay on 2 (the ones I'm immediately recalling are in Farmington, Norridgewock, and Skowhegan).
In Bangor, 2 runs through downtown so you might consider a route-around depending on your destination/starting point on that end.
Since you're making the trip in late September, keep in mind most parks and campgrounds close Columbus Day, some even close October 1.
