The biggest issue by far for travel into Canada is that of guns. There are some long guns (shotguns) and some hand-guns that can be transported into Canada, whether a person is going TO so some place else is irrelevant. If a person wants to have weapons with them when they arrive in Alaska, then the easiest way is to have them shipped via FedX or DHL to a gun shop for retrieval.
The 100% best thing a traveler can do is to check with the official border websites for all the needed info.
Food restrictions change frequently, so what is allowed today, may not be allowed next week, never mind next year.
Pets are easy...get and carry currant rabies certs. Pet food is more of an issue going into the US..the food needs to be made in the US and still in it's original bag. I actually make my own dog food, frozen and in muffin pucks and have had to problems to date, and yes, I declare them.
Another interesting border crossing event is if someone, anyone, in the vehicle has a Criminal Record. And that is sometimes a tough one..if it's a criminal offense in Canada, but not in the US? it is still a criminal offense, and...that person will be turned back. Some folks deal with that by having the party in question fly to Alaska, or you can all take the ferry, or you can fly to Alaska and rent a camper. This applies to people entering the US, too.
It's the guns that cause lots of problems. Some people just have to have them with them and will lie, or 'forget' that there is a weapon or weapons in the vehicle, and then it gets very unpleasant. This applies to people entering the US as well.
And bear spray....don't bring it to the border. You can buy all you want up here.
