BC Hwy 5 San Felipe South to Hwy 1

In about 1975 I took my VW camper van to San Felipe BC and then traveled the road south from there nearly to where it met the Hwy 1.

At this time it was diabolically bad and challenging but great fun. At one point we had to be towed up a steep hill by a 4 wheel drive P/U that came along as it was just too steep for the VW.

I have not been back since and wonder if anyone has traveled this road recently and can give me a report about it and it's conditions.

I am sure it has changed dramatically. But I would like to try it again. The scenery was fantastic and most of it was deserted.

Thanks in advance
  • Thanks for the update!

I think it was that hill north of Rosario that we had to be pulled up in the VW. But it was soooo many years ago. In 1975 there were sections of the road that were "disappeared" and unmarked that traversed great slabs of granite rock. It was definitely a challenging 4x4 road then. As I recall one day it took us 12 hours to go about 8 miles. Much of the time we had to walk in front of the VW Bus to find a path and clear boulders.

Sounds like the road has improved. You say you'd drive it in a car? I would like to haul my 30 footer with my 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 down that road. Do you really think it impossible now? Do you have any photos you can share??

I am hoping enough has changed after 40 years that I can do this....

    Thanks so much.
  • The road from the border to San Felipe is brand new and smooth, the road from San Felipe south to Gonzaga is sketchy at first but then turns to smooth new highway. From Gonzaga to Cocos Corner is still dirt and then over the hill to North of Rosario is still dirt but we use it all the time on our tours it takes 2 hours to go 30 miles but it is amazing scenery I would not take a rv or trailer over this road but in a toad or a buggy it is awesome and the quickest way to get from the Sea of Cortes to the Pacific ocean. I think that is what you were asking......
