here is another thought we had, the cable ferry seems like a good idea :)

The cable ferry is West of Nakusp so you will not see it on either of these routes. If you want to see it you could make most of your original loop and then head SE from Vernon through Cherryville and to the cable ferry, across to Nakusp and then North to Revelstoke. There is another ferry on the route from Nakusp to Revelstoke which is also very scenic. There is also a great Provincial Park named Blanket Creek on this stretch that is really nice and quiet and is the site of an old homestead that was abandoned when the valley was flooded when the hydro dams were built and the Arrow Lakes were created.
There is TONS of stuff to see on this entire route. Fairmont Hot Springs, Kimberley, Fort Steele, Nakusp Hot Springs, numerous beautiful lakes and beautiful scenery everywhere. The Kootenays are my favorite part of the Province. Your route also includes a taste of the Okanagan which is beautiful as well. I'll think about it and add as I think of some more.
There is a large mountain pass called Salmo pass West of Creston that I believe is the highest in BC. It is a tough climb up and long descent down (you may even see snow at the top in July), but I think your truck will handle it. :B
