Bears in Hyder

Are you seeing bears in Hyder? Are they expected to still be there in a couple weeks--end of Aug? We are in Wasilla, headed for Denali and Fairbanks and will then work our way south to Hyder. Hoping it will not be too late to enjoy seeing when we get there.
  • We saw one brown bear on Wednesday night, nothing morning or evening Thursday in the rain. The season is winding down and the bears are just striping the Dog salmon leaving most of it.

If Mira is still alive she will likely be there. May be some other stragglers as well.

  • We were there on July 24, very early in the season, and saw 2 black bears. Some photos here.
  • We were just there yesterday and saw lots of live and dead salmon but no bears. We did see a sow with her cub driving to Stewart/Hyder. In all we saw five black bears from Bell2Lodge south bound on the Cassiar.
  • We were there a couple of weeks ago. Saw 1 large Grizzly and 1 Black Bear. The Grizzly came in from the upper viewing area and worked his way down the viewing area toward bridge on road, was there for quite some time. The Black bear came in from the bridge and when it saw the Grizzly he took off. Should get better as month goes on. Ranger said they where seeing 2 or 3 a day when we were there.
  • This is the perfect time of year (mid August-on) to go see the bears in Hyder, although it is still a hit and miss scenario at the bear viewing observation deck.
