We've driven US80 also, Longview to Tybee Is. It's generally OK, but I20 gets most the DOT dollars.
There are a couple of current threads running mentioning tolls.
There is a connection. The richer more populated states tend to have better roads than the poorer more rural states.
While we complain about tolls as we should. THey do ensure lots of roads are in decent repair.

Anyone got a good route through or around Shreveport from Longview, Texas to Jackson, Missippi? We have been beat to death on I-20 going through Shreveport and even on the loop.
Sure would appreciate some information for a smoother route.Posted By: rjxj on 11/01/16 11:57pm

Westbound I-10 in LA is the roughest of rides.
After hitting one of those bumps my closet door wouldn't latch and my slide was out of alignment. I messed with the adjustments over and over to finally get it to close without rubbing. I'll never go back there again.
I agree with the above definitely would not take I-10 as an alternate. One area of the westbound section between Baton Rouge and Lafayette was so bad that it actually threw my little dog into the air, injuring her back when she slammed back down! In my view, Louisiana officials should be put in jail. Oh wait... it's Louisiana ... they are in jail. :)
I'm looking at US-190 or US-90 as alternate ways to get from New Orleans past the worst sections of I-90. Judging by the posts here (and elsewhere), though, I'm not encouraged about finding a smooth drive anywhere. Ugh.
Skip - 4huskersExplorerYou can take I220 around the north side, it's not good, but a lot better than I20 through town. Last week on US 285 between Loving, NM and Pecos, TX just about did us in.
- jnharleyExplorerWe took a 7 week motorcycle trike/motorcycle tent trailer trip to the northeast and frankly pick a road and it was bad. Did not matter if it was interstate, state, county, or local roads, many of them were bone jarring bad. A couple of times I wondered if I had broken my elbow while it was on my passenger arm rest because the pavement was so bad and the bumps unavoidable. There were a few good sections of roads but not many. We find the roads in LA no worse than any other place we have been.
- azrvingExplorerBut, but the infrastructure has all been repaired in the last 8 years or so!!!!!

That's a long way to get "around Shreveport from Longview, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi". :@
Westbound I-10 in LA is the roughest of rides. - padredwNomadWe live near Longview and have been through Jackson more times than I can remember. Considering the alternative routes, there is really no better way than right on I-20. My suggestion is to slow down on the few really bad sections. As I recall one of the worst is just east of Shreveport. I have never noticed any significant problem on I-220 and that is what I usually take.
My suggestion to slow down is not a "smart alec" remark. You could slow down enough to make a difference on those specific sections and still be far ahead in time traveled over any alternate route.
The secret is knowing before you approach those rough sections. For the first time driver on I-20 there is no solution to this secret except: "At the first 'bump' slow down."
There are miles and miles of good surface through Louisiana on I-20 and a few really rough spots.
There is a rough section east of Vicksburg and around Jackson one hits the "waves" and then some really rough surface within the city.
I been towing fifth-wheels over I-20 for 20 years. - TECMikeExplorerAnyone ever find or take small paved farm/ranch roads or similar roads around Shreveport?
- mlwilliams808ExplorerDon't take I-10 thinking it's any better, the stretch between the Atchafalaya causeway and Lafayette is worse than I-20!
- TECMikeExplorerFound a small highway "2" connecting with Texas "49" crossing Texas into Louisiana, north of Shreveport.
Small road and out of the way. Ties back into I-20 east of Shreveport, missing the city by twenty miles or so. Looks like it might save the fillings in our teeth!
Anyone ever taken this route?
