Beer, Beef, Dairy, Fruits and Vegetables

In Montana, I plan on stocking my Refrigerator with Milk, Ice Cream, Cheese, Prime Beef, Fruits, Vegetables beer before traveling into BC - Will I be OK with Customs inspection at Border Crossing ?
  • At the border crossings between Washington and British Columbia, the agents are more rigorous about fruits & veggies, regardless of the direction you're travelling. The reason is that both Washington and B.C. have much farmland and orchards so they enforce the rules to ensure no transfer of disease or insects. I expect a crossing from Montana to B.C. would have the same rigor.

On the crossings here in Yukon, the only issue seems to be taking citrus into Alaska. Have never been asked about other fruits or veggies when travelling either direction, but then neither Alaska or Yukon have much farmland or orchards.

If you're stocking up on beer, be prepared to pay duty on quantities over the amount permitted across the border for "personal use".

This actually a good question. If you are travelling from Canada to the U.S., you cannot take fruits, vegetables , meat across the border.
The only limitation coming into Canada is on alcohol.

As to WHY : food is a LOT cheaper is the U.S.

I totally disagree with the above statement. I always cross into US with a full fridge and freezer. Certain things are not allowed - do your homework and know the rules and you won't have problems. We travel fully loaded for 2 reasons - #1, cost - some things are cheaper at home and #2 - convenience of not having to stop and shop when we are trying to reach a destination.

Coming back into Canada we only get asked about alcohol and cigarettes - rarely asked about food.

We live in Southern Ontario and use 2 different border crossings - Michigan and NY. Other areas of Canada might be a bit different but we travel extensively and have not had problems. Know the rules!

  • I have to ask WHY?

Your implication is that Canada is a 3rd world country. While in many cases our beef is even better than what you find in your superstores.

But yes, you can load yourself down with extra weight and lack of freshness. Keep things in store container. No root vegetables, no citrus fruits. These can pick up insects.

Of course, there are limitations on all alcoholic products.

& isn't travel for discovering new or what you don't know????
