Bella Coola Info

Hi
we just decided that we're too close (in williams lake now) to Bella Coola to pass it up, especially since we're told we're in prime bear season!
we will be leaving the mh in williams lake and taking our jeep. planning on staying 2 nights.
any info you can offer on a)sights to see b)bear watching (preferably without a guide) c) accomodations to stay in (b&b or cabin ,etc)

thanks,
we're looking forward to this adventure and will be leaving tomorrow!
  • This is really a Canada topic, but even on that board it doesn't get much discussion

When we went there some years back (May/June) we didn't intentionally go bear sighting, but ended up seeing our share, mainly while driving to the Odegaard Falls trail.

We camped at Gnome's Home, pretty nice for a commercial campground, making that the base for 4 days of side roads and hikes. We also camped several nights on the way in/out at rec-sites.

The 'bellacoola.ca' website has good information on things to do and stay. Get the relevant Backwoods Mapbook if you want to venture of the main highway.
  • Paulj,
thanks for the response...i will look up those websites...leaving in the morning and very excited!
  • Right at the bottom of The Hill there's a rest stop and the Atnarko campground. That could be your first good chance to see bears, since it is close to the river. If you have time you might even drive SE up the Atnarko, before continuing west.
