You shouldn't have any issues on Interstates, some grades are longer and if your are going 35 MPH in the right lane with the trucks for a few minutes who cares? 15 miles is a long grade. If you are really concerned buy a copy of Mountain Directory West and plan for grades to your hearts content.
Take I40 to GC, continue through Bakersville to 46 and 101. Stop and enjoy the wineries then up to the bay area. Recommend 101 all the way to Astoria, OR - So much BETTER than 5 and Portland.
