From Grand Canyon, take the I-40, and least brutal will be to take I-15 towards SoCal. It's steep but downhill. Then go I-5 to the Bay Area. The steep grades is in Grapevine but again it's downhill. California's highway issues is mostly because it's very long and where your trailer-puller will lose momentum and struggle.
Avoid the 395 and the Tioga Pass with 9,000 feet above sea level and very long uphill climbs.
Definitely hug the coast from Bay Area (Highway 1/I-101). It's not as steep although very tight at some point but it will not be an issue with your 23' trailer. These route has the best views and public campsites. If you are not allergic to seafoods, stop by roadside kiosks and seafood markets for oysters, smoked tuna belly or jaws, Dungeness crab, etc. Well, and. legal weeds in every street corner it seems in Oregon.
If you have time, circle the whole of 101 to the tip of Washington with side trips by ferries to Victoria BC and/or Vancouver then take the inland 101 or !-5 back.
