Not familiar with the app the OP mentioned, but there are a lot of features built into my Garmin (and it is a 7+ year old model) that makes it very handy and works well for me. I do a lot of pre-planning on my route rather than just "hit the road" so I know I'm not going to get into any serious binds.
Yeah, it's another device I have to carry around with me, but it also means my phone is free to do other things.
Our is 2 years old and feel the same. As with any GPS confirm your route before hitting the road.
FYI It is illegal to mount your GPS on your windshield in many states and in some it is only legal in certain locations on your windshield. You need to use a dash mount that normally does not come with the unit but you buy as accessory item.
