Best place to turn north?

Heading to Alaska the middle of June from Michigan. Going to drive across the U.P. on US2. Plan on staying on US2 for a long ways. Our friends turned North about at Fargo and cut across Canada. Said it was farm land and not bad driving. Anybody have a preference where you like to turn North into Canada from the USA? Just looking for a nice route to take. Not looking for the fastest or anything, taking 2 month trip through Alaska. I live in souther Michigan and really don't want to go through Chicago, so I'm going across the U.P. Plan on hitting Glacier Nat. Park on the way back.

  • That is an incredibly scenic route. After you enter Canada take highway 3 then 22 north, it is much more interesting than 2 and you miss Calgary which IMHO is just another large city.
From Jasper go west on 16 then north on 37 to the Yukon, return by the Alaska and Yellowhead highways to Winnipeg. It will be an unforgettable trip. Oh, and have LOTS of room on the camera card.:B
  • I would suggest coming all the way to Shelby, MT, then turn north toward Calgary.
Pick up CAN 1 CAN 93 and go up through Jasper to Prince George.
You could return going east from Dawson Creek to Edmonton and then Fargo

Gas/Fuel is usually cheaper in the states so many head further west before turning north in Montana. Maybe I'm crazy, but on my AlCan trips my mileage was better with Canadian gas (hand calculated).
  • Only words of wisdom you need....turn north before you hit Pike Street Market in Seattle...either that or start swimming.
