Best Road for 38 ft RV & tow to Rt 101 from I-5

All three are long and winding. I've lived on 199 for 40 years and have driven it literally thousands of times. Many times driving our bus and towing a Nissan Xtera. It follows the Smith River Canyon and is quite beautiful. Especially as you drive through Redwoods National Park. There are some narrow spots where you really have to pay attention but all in all, having driven all three of your choices, I would choose 199.

If you don't need to be on the coast south of Reedsport, OR, your best bet would be 138 near Sutherlin to 38 to 101.

Interesting that from Old Station its the same Distance/time to get to Crescent City with either of 2 routes: 89,I-5,199, 101. Or 44, 299, 101.

If you don't have any need to be south of Crescent City for any reason, I would take 89, I-5, 199, and 101.

As others have said, 199 or 299 are windey. I would not recommend 36 at all.
I have driven 299 with a 30' 5er and while it is windey, it really is doable. 199 means you go to Grants Pass before cutting over. Should you choose this, I would stop at Oregon Caves, half way to Crescent City. Worth the stop.

I would go 299, which takes you to Eureka. Old town worth seeing. Going north on 101 from there is spectacular with several Redwood stands before Crescent City. The real neat part is below Crescent City where you are hugging the ocean while in towering Redwoods!
That is my choice.
PS: Take 44 from 89 to Redding and then pick up 299. It is really pretty from Lassen Park down to Shingletown.

If you take 299 be careful of the logging trucks. I was run off the road by one several years ago. They stop for no man or rig.

We live in Redding and have towed a 31.5' 5th wheel over 299 with no issues. A great deal of the sharper turns have been realigned with construction still going on ( still some delays except on Sundays). But, Weaverville is worth seeing as is old town Eureka and nearby Ferndale. 299 follows the Trinity River for a good distance and is a designated "scenic route." Then, as others have noted, the drive north on 101 from Eureka is really spectacular.

138/38 is by far the easiest drive from the I5 corridor to 101. The dive along the Umpqua River is beautiful. There is a nice RV Park in Elkton where 138 meets 38 that is right on the river and has a boat pull if you like float fishing the river.

I've driven 299 to Redding in a class C and it was up/down twisty mountain road and I didn't care for it.

Thanks for all input. We finally took 299 and for anyone considering it, really had no problem and can recommend it. We took our time, slowed at curves, pulled off and thoroughly enjoyed the views. Like so many of the mountain roads/secondary roads, use your head and be careful. Linda (38 ft Adventurer w/CRV tow)
