The only issue with Hwy 82 is the 4000' change in elevation from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo. Roughly 12 miles of decent.
Carlsbad to Roswell to Alamogordo is easy. Adds 46 miles to trip
I've done them both towing 14K 34' 5vr........but I have an exhaust brake and enjoy secondary/back-roads/mountain driving.
