We did that drive last summer, taking 85 to 212 to I-90.
However after traveling west on I-90 out of Billings, we took 191 at Big Timber to 87 to Great Falls. At Great Falls, we took I-15 up to 2.
If you want to stay off of the interstate, you can take 89 out of Great Falls. 87 joined up with 89 east of Great Falls, so you are already on 89, when you get to Great Falls.
Returning we came back on 89 all the way to Livingston. That passes through Lewis and Clark National Forest, but has the disadvantage of having a very long (many miles) uphill.
We did the trip in our 2007 Journey pulling a CRV and had no difficulty.
