Best Route from Rock Springs, Wy to Yellowstone

Next year we will be in Rock Springs and will want to visit Yellowstone. Are the the more direct roads sufficient for a Class A?

  • If you’re interested in a little bit of a detour.....You could go to Kemmerer (I80:west beyond Green River to Hwy 30) and visit the original JC Penny store still operating and you can also visit his home ....now a museum! There is also Fossil Butte National Monument about 15 miles beyond Kemmerer (on Hwy 30) which has a pretty impressive fossil museum of local fossils!

Go north from Kemmerer, through the Hoback Canyon, to Jackson, then continue to the park! memtb
  • Rock Springs to Pinedale to Hoback Junction to Jackson to South gate of Yellowstone.
We take this route every year in late summer.
We stop in Rock Springs overnight at the Walmart..if we need to stock up before we get into tourist country and prices.
We stop again at Warren's Bridge campground which is about 20 miles northwest of Pinedale..has water and a dump station...and puts us about 2 hours from Jackson.
We get fuel at Hoback Junction, just after you go through the round about...easy in and out at station.
In Jackson, a block before the square downtown, we take the truck route, which is easier than turning at the square.

Or, you can turn south at Hoback Junction and go down to Alpine, then go right to Idaho and route 26 over to 20 and north to West Yellowstone.
Palisades campground is about 7 miles west of Alpine.. water and dump station there.
West Yellowstone has several rv parks, but in heavy demand, so reserve as soon as you can.
  • West Yellowstone is the easiest entry point, both in terms of approachs from south and north, and access to the main attractions, but that's bit out of your way. South entrance from Grand Tetons is also reasonable. The east entrance via Cody climbs more.

Read up on roads in the park. It is a effectively a volcanic mountain top, with a 7000 ft lake in the middle. Some roads are easy, others more difficult. Approaches are only part of the drive.
  • 191 thru Jackson, Moran and into the park. Not a beautiful route for the first 1/4 of the route but doable in a MH and the most direct
  • At Rock Springs, north on uS 191 to US 189. Takes you in the south entrance.
