It comes down to what you will see and be able to do going west on I-80 or I84. Less fuel and time on the road going to Reno and across to I-5 and then taking Hwy 20 west from Redding. More to see going through eastern Oregon and more places where I would want to stop along the way.
Going to Redwood National Park I would also go through Mendocino and Fort Bragg along the coast and inland on Hwy 101 I would go along the Avenue of the Giants and visit Ferndale and Eureka on my way north to Prairie Creek.
