- trailertravelerExplorerCody has the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Old Trail Town and the Rodeo. Take a day and drive the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and Beartooth Highway with a stop in Red Lodge before returning to Cody.
In addition to the hot springs, Thermopolis has a Dinosaur Museum and the Legend Rock Petroglyph Site. - DesertHawkExplorerEasiest (less grades) would be leaving through the South Entrance & the Tetons. At Moran take it East toward Casper.
Fastest route it seems would be I-80 W from Omaha to Rawlins, WY; US 287 N to Moran (Tetons). North to Yellowstone. 1,438 km, 14 hours 0 mins from Omaha to Moran. Many people say it is a good route to use. Of course it would be in reverse of this from Yellowstone to Moran to Omaha via Rawlins.
Here's a Recent Post on Yellowstone & Wyoming Sites & Sights, maybe something in it will be of help.
At Cheyenne, I'd use I-25 up to Casper then west from there to Moran Junction in the Tetons north of Jackson (miss having to tread your way on somewhat narrow city streets of Jackson). Jackson is a town in the Jackson Hole valley of Teton County. 1,483 km, 14 hours 6 mins from Omaha to Moran. One could see the sights out from Casper & Wheatland. Or in reverse Moran to Casper, to Cheyenne via 25, to Omaha via 80.
One could take advantage of the Overnighting Sites & Sights in the Douglas & Wheatland Area. Includes Guernsey & Fort Laramie Area found in the ^ above link.
As I mentioned the I-25 to Casper then US 20/26 to Moran in the Tetons, then up to Yellowstone. Thermopolis is off this route. One could go via Cody to Yellowstone as well & bypass the Tetons. More of a climb by going the Cody route. We entered via Cody once in the '90s. Came out that way in 2009. Again reverse of this.
We've gone by Thermopolis, WY twice to do a soak in the hot spring water at the State Bath House. Very neat. We overnighted in the Wind River Canyon in Aug '09 & at one of the Boysen State Park campgrounds by the lake some years ago. But each time, we had already gone to Yellowstone, before stopping.

Perhaps if you have visited the Tetons already, using the East Entrance by Cody would be a good way to leave. We have used it before (entered that way as well once). 1,581 km, 14 hours 57 mins from Fishing Bridge area to Omaha by Cody, then S to Thermopolis to Casper, Cheyenne & I-80 E. But this would take a little more of a grade to come up to get out of Yellowstone then a descent into Cody. Mostly just a simple descent from Cody to Thermopolis & on to Casper.
Start at Fishing Bridge: 1,525 km, 15 hours 11 mins going to Moran, U.S. 287 S to Rawlins & I-80 E.
Kind of depends on how you got to Yellowstone.
Neat place to see is Cody, with lot of things to do.
Another route option: Leaving via Moran to Casper / I-25 S to US 20 to Lusk. Keep on US 20 to well into Nebraska: North of Norfolk take US 275 to Omaha area.
1,392 km, 14 hours 45 mins.
The area near Lusk (West & South of Lusk) in WY: Overnighting Sites & Sights in the Douglas & Wheatland Area. Includes Guernsey & Fort Laramie Area.
Guernsey State Park ------- Fort Laramie National Historic Site ------ Oregon Trail Ruts and Register Cliff
Fort Robinson & Chadron State Parks in the Northwest corner of the Nebraska, another neat one near Valentine, Smith Falls State Park. We did an overnight there, as did my son earlier. Neat place. Unique Place.
On the border NB/SD there is an Indian Casino at the state line. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Casino Wacipi. Not far north of Valentine.
More Nebraska US 83 Sights.
However, using US 26 South of Fort Laramie Area would be another option (Closer than Lusk & US 20). Goes to Scottsbluff, by Chimney Rock, Ash Hollow & near Lake Ogallala State Rec' Area by Ogallala. Where you can take I-80 E. 1,406 km, 14 hours 5 mins Fishing Bridge to Omaha.
I-80: North Platte, Nebraska: the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and Camping; never stopped there, but driven by on US 83; nice looking campground by the river.
