Best Route To Avoid Terrible Indiana I-65 And I-69

On our recent return trip to Western Michigan from Florida, we took our usual route through Indiana via I-65 and then to I-69 at Ft.Wayne.
I vowed when we got home I would never drive on these Indiana roads again. Between the pot holes, expansion joints and general very poor condition, it was by far the worst roads we have traveled. The beating the tires and coach took was very exasperating. I'm thankful no apparent damage was done.

Another Indiana issue is that motorhomes are not allowed to use the truck diesel pump lanes. Rather we are supposed to use another diesel pump SOMEWHERE on site for cars, small trucks, etc.

Can you tell I'm not a big fan of Indiana! Anyway, would appreciate any suggestions for an alternate Indiana route.

Thanks much for tolerating my rant.
  • They are working on turning US31 into freeway - once construction is done you should have smooth sailing for a few years.
  • Indiana! Don't ya just love us here! I started avoiding all Indiana interstates several years ago. I'll drive out of my way to avoid them.

    North-South: Highway 31, Highway 13 and 37, Highway 27.

East-West, Avoid highway 6 (Northern Indiana. Its good in some places, awful in others.
    Highway 24 is pretty good,
    Highway 28 is pretty good,
    Highway 32 is pretty good,
    Highway 40 is pretty good.

You've got to remember though, the secondary roads are all 55 mph or less and often go through villages and town, and you've got local traffic to contend with.

There's no real good way to to go SW to NE or SE to NW directions in Indiana. Lots of turns either way.

Actually, I live on a county road in Madison County, and (you may not believe it), but the road I live on is smoother and better maintained than I-69 and I-70! REALLY!

Take the back roads, slow down, and maybe it won't be so stressful going through Indiana!
