best route to portland oregon from lake tahoe ca.

Our garmin wants to send us back to Carson utah and then northwest over some unfamiliar highways where we will come in to I-5 around Shasta. Are these good highways? Are there a bunch of high passes...

yes, I meant to say Nevada. We are traveling with an animal that gets car sick and am trying to avoid winding roads and steep passes. Thanks for your response. David
