best route

what is the best route from palm springs area to sacramento then on to oregon. 5 or 99 north.
  • They both suck but there is no real alternitve. I myself use 5 as there dosen't seem to be quite as much truck traffic and 1 or 2 less pot holes, LOL. I think it's better also as you don't have all the towns of the central valley right next to the road, JMO.

Sorry, just saw this is from 2002, it's still the same though.

Here is the route I use from Sac. to Palm Springs:
    1. I-10 west
    2. Hwy. 62
    3. Hwy. 247
    4. Hwy. 395
    5. Hwy. 58 to Bakersfield
    6. Norh to Hwy 46 west to
    7. I-5
    9. North to Sac.

    Alt. 2
    1. 1-10 west to I-5
    2. North on 1-5 to Sac./Oregon
This route runs you into L.A. traffic until you get over the "Grape Vine".

  • Either one, flip a coin. I usually go one way on 5 and then the other on 99 just break up the boredom

I really don't know what your definition of " best " is, but we always take Interstate 5 when making the same trip you are describing. We took it just two weeks ago and it was fine going up 5.

We make stops at the Bakersfield RV Resort in Bakersfield, at the Flag city RV park at I-5 and intersection with Highway 12, and at the Durango RV Park in Red Bluff. ( If you use the Bakersfield RV Resort, take highway 99 from the bottom of the grapevine to Bakersfield rather than I-5. When you leave Bakersfield RV resort, go due west on Panama Lane until you hit I-5) Bakersfield RV resort has an excellent restaurant on premises, by the way.
