Best routes across middle of country west of the Mississippi

We're planning a trip from California to the East Coast and back again, probably visiting Washington state up north, and Maine and Florida back east. May stray up into Canada. I'd like to hear sugge...

You'll find a more scenic route if you stay off the interstates. We've done Hwy 2 from Washington to Michigan and it's very nice. Fort Peck Corp of Engineers campground in eastern Montana is a beauty - huge manicured grassy sites.
