Best times for Michigan, Minnesota & Wisconsin?

We are wondering how to work a schedule that might allow us to see the NE in the same trip. Are the best times the same for both areas? We don't want any freezing weather either place, but prefer temp...

We were hoping we could work it in one year since we will be starting from Washington State, but it does look like we will need to break it in to two trips. It looks link fall is a bit warmer. How would you head south, and how soon?
