Big truck gets stuck in Zion tunnel; driver blames GPS

Don't do this

Message -- even though the little lady inside your GPS unit really sounds like she knows what she is talking about, you can't always believe her. And if the sign says "no big rigs," believe the sign.
  • back in the forth's a semi got stuck at the umatilla army depot under the railroad track over pass. they tried every thing to get it out and couldn't. the semi was loaded with bombs for the war effort and a little kid told them he knew how to get it out and they ignored him until they finally gave up and said OK how do we get it out. he told them let air out of the tires so the truck in lowered. it worked.

The funny thing is that he should have been able to back up, and move closer to the center, and keep going! I drove a 12' tall Country Coach through the tunnel around 2010, and it fit just fine! I was going down the middle with the lanes closed except my direction.

I hope they did not do to much damage. I wonder if they used a pavement grinding machine, if they could grind away about 3' of the mountain, then lay down a new layer of 12" blacktop, and have a new lower finished floor to the tunnel!

It should not be as expensive as blocking traffic for another 2 years!

He was wedged in according to the article. Hard to backup when you're stuck. He was stuck because he wasn't going down the center of the tunnel because there was traffic coming the other way.

  • I don't think semi trucks are even allowed in national parks. I know the big tour buses can fit through that tunnel. We've seen them.
