The 10 lbs is the capacity of the container, not the contents. Most RVs these days fall in the wider than 96" category as well. As for the route preference, the western route will burn less fuel and has no toll, but the eastern route has less traffic all times of day. Morning and afternoon rush can be rough on the west side.

Not quite right. You can have a limited amount of propane.

Vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using both the Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor Tunnels. In addition, vehicles in excess of 13 feet, 6 inches, in height, or 96 inches (8 feet) in width; and all double trailers are prohibited from using the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. I had the same thought, but how will you prove you have less than ten pounds in the container, on the side of the road, when stopped by police? Carry scales?

I-695 is the best answer. People have different opinions as to which way around Baltimore on I-695. We prefer I-695 (Outer Belt), others take I-695 (Inner Belt). It all depends on personal preferrence since ther is only 2 miles different between the two routes. Inner Belt is the Key Bridge while the Outer Belt is without tolls, not that that is the governing factor. Again, it's only personal preferrence, they both do the trick getting one around Baltimore. Note that there are no restrictions on the Outer Belt, heading southbound on I-695.

According to Google, the distance around Baltimore on the bridge (east and with a toll) is about the same as the distance west with no toll. I've always been in the habit of going west. Camp on!

From the Hudson Valley, you might want to consider I-84 west to I-81 south to Harrisbug, Pa., and then I-83 south to Baltimore and the I-695 bypass. You will avoid the tolls and congestion in New Jersey and Delaware, but it is probably farther so you will burn more gas. Map it each way and compare. Also depends on your destination.
