Blue Ridge Park Way

Fall colors. Leaving the 12 th of Oct. Would like to start in the North and travel southwest and end up in Tenn. One big concern now is we are running into campground closures and we do not know what kind of road conditions we will run into. Points of interest, etc. etc. thanks.

We're heading down there in a couple of weeks as well, and this link has helped me out for some highlights. Love fall camping trips for sure!

  • No the BRP does not run into Tenn. However. The Parkway ends in Cherokee at the South end. And Tenn is a easy trip from there.

Honestly. In Oct you should have no problems road or other wise riding the Parkway. We have camped on the BRP in the higher elevations all the way to the closing date of the Campgrounds. Got cold a time or two. But never even close to being snowed in.

You will want to plan your trip carefully. there is only ONE place on the BRP in NC to buy gas. I believe it is near the Bluffs Over look. The rest of the time you will have to exit the Parkway to fuel, and as mentioned. Many of the roads leading to, and from it, are not too good.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway was not go into TN but anyway......

At Roanoke VA Rt 220 just South of the Parkway. very easy on & off there is a WalMart within eyesite for supplies.

Rt 52 / I77 south to Mt Airy (Mayberry) Mayberry Campground is open year round Reservations needed many weekends through Nov 7 it is maybe an hour south but worth the stop for everything Andy Griffith.

Also go to the Parkways Web site http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/ they give a list of near by campgrounds
  • To be clear, the Blue Ridge Parkway does not enter Tennessee. Although the original plans called for the Parkway to be further west and leave Virginia into Tennessee, the Robert Doughton, a North Carolinian, was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. He insisted that the Parkway go through the North Carolina mountains. And so it does.

The Parkway campground open in May and close at the end of October.

  • We did the trip in October of last year.

Did not take the coach on the parkway. We moved the coach to a campground and used the toad to travel on the parkway, doing about 100 miles north one day and then 100 miles south the next. Did not have issues finding campgrounds and driving the car was more relaxing and scenic for me the driver. We usually made the return trip to the campground off the parkway. Worked out well for us. We started at the north end of the Skyline Drive so we could see both.

We did run into snow at the last stop in Maggie Valley and the parkway was closed for 2 days. We missed being snowed in, in Boone NC but were leaving for Maggie Valley that day.

do a google...lots of information out there.
  • Be aware that some roads that intersect with the BRP are not suitable for RVs. For example Virginia SR 43 at Peaks of Otter does not allow RVs. Plan ahead if you need to leave the Parkway and go to a town.
  • Peak colors in Tenn will be sometime in October. Depends on elevation, Temp, and rainfall. Generally 2nd to 3rd week is peak. We have seen it last 3 days to 2 weeks. Again depends on elevation and weather.
  • Federal and state campgrounds mostly close Nov. 1st.
