Blue Ridge Parkway...first two weeks of April

We will be moving North the first two weeks of April and would like to drive the Blue Ridge parkway from Ashville to the Northern end....any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

We are towing a 35' TT and will be looking for CG's along the way!

thanks!

  • Google Camping Blue Ridge Parkway because a lot of the campgrounds are closed till May.
Otter Creek Campground - MP 60.8
Peaks of Otter Campground - MP 85.6
Rocky Knob Campground - MP 161.1
Doughton Park Campground - MP 239.2
Price Park Campground - MP 296.9
Linville Falls Campground - MP 316.4
Crabtree Falls Campground - MP 339.5
    Mount Pisgah - MP 408.6
  • Last summer we did the Blue Ridge Parkway and Styline Drive. We found that about fifty miles per day and back to camp was about right, allowing time for stops at turnouts and other points of interest. Therefore, we made camp every hundred miles. Our camps for the Blue Ridge were in or near Ashville, Boone, Meadows of Dan, and Natural Bridge.

Three nights at each camp (plus extra days at Asheville); that was one day for moving camp, one day 50 miles south and back, one day 50 miles north and back. For the Skyline Drive, our camp was near Harrisonburg, VA. We found commerical RV parks not far from the Parkway entrances.
  • Not so sure how green it will be that early but as suggested Davidson River is a really nice CG. 1 loop 100% electric. 2 others partial electric.
  • My recommendation would be to spend your entire time at a campground in Asheville. You could go north on the parkway one day and when ready to head back to the camper drop down on hwy 80 or even father north to run back on the interstate. A second day you could make a loop south on the parkway, drop down on Hwy 215, visit Brevard, the back up 280 to the interstate to the campground.
A third day could be used to explore Asheville or the Biltmore estate.

The views from Asheville south are some of the best views along the parkway.

For the campground in Asheville, I would suggest you do a search. The only one I'm familiar with is Lake Powhatten NF which does have some hookup sites that would fit your rig. The one advantage of Lake Powhatten is it is only a couple miles from the parkway and Asheville.
  • I think 3 to 4 days is minimum if you really want to enjoy the trip, take in some sites, go on hikes, etc. There are nice campgrounds on the parkway but the don't have electric. Some of them would be quite tight for a 35' TT.
There shouldn't be any clearance problems on the actual parkway.
We went from Afton down to Doughton, NC in 3 days. We camped at Peaks of Otter, Rocky Knob, and Doughton. Rocky Knob was by far my favorite.
  • My preference would be to stay in a campground with hook ups....leave the truck hooked to the TT and use our second vehicle to explore the area(s) Don't want to rush....is three to four days enough time to really take (most of) it all in?

Don't mind dry camping for a night or two if we can't get into a
    CG....

    Any issues with height restrictions?

    Thanks!
  • There are campgrounds on the Parkway without hookups. There are some nice ones close by like Davidson River in NC, Goose Point and Sherando Lake in Va all very nice with electric hookups.
  • Do you want to stay up on the parkway or stay off the parkway so you can take your toad up on the parkway during the day?
