Blue Ridge Parkway prob reopening Fri (Pisgah Inn open now)

Oddly, the BRP has remained open as a thru road, despite the federal shutdown. All CG's and such are closed, but the road remains open.

But they've just closed one stretch on the SW side of Asheville due to drainage issues (yes, more of those). It's closed from US 25 (Hendersonville Rd) to NC 191 (Brevard Rd). A culvert failed and the road got undermined in the heavy rain last night at the I-26 bridge. Detour is probably signed, but just in case: NB, at the Brevard Road light, take a left (toward town); ~5 miles to I-40E; next exit, US 25 south is ~3 miles. SB, reverse.

At least this detour takes you past the WNC Farmer's Market and the Moose Cafe (home-style Southern cookin' at its finest).

Current predictions are that a repair will take about 2 weeks. Dunno how that'll work with the shutdown.

  • I was hoping to be at Davidson River for Thanksgiving...not looking good.
  • Sounds promising. We have an annual trip up that way in a week.
  • Not odd at all......Hard to close the BRPW in Virginia as it has numerous accesses & for some it is the only access to their property & homes.... Parts do close in the winter but not all of it. There are a couple stretches that share the roadway with the state / fed highway system....... RT 43 near Bedford VA is one.

Some of the restaurants / motels / are Fed owned but a private contractor bids to lease & run them.
  • Wow!!! Just saw a news story on the closure at the I-26 bridge. They've _already_ got a contractor working on it as an 'emergency project'. There's was footage of a trackhoe already tearing out the old pavement. If they don't run into unanticipated delays, they hope to have it re-opened by Friday afternoon. Slick!

  • Update... Pisgah Inn is reopening!!! It's a restaurant, motel, and gift shop on the Parkway, about 20 miles west of town. See http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20131009/NEWS01/310090058/Pisgah-Inn-reopen-today.

Glad to see that there's cooperation between the rangers and the concessionaire, for the public's benefit. This also puts about 100 people back to work.

The closure I posted above remains in effect, since that will require serious road repairs.
