We planned to run the entire road in the May of 2010. With the current "Polar Vortex", you might want to work out a back up plan as much of the south end (higher elevation) may be closed for any number of reasons.
Plan on getting off the BRP for just about everything you need. The speed limit on the road is 45MPH, count on not being able to make it. There is a Scenic Overlook (no overnight) about every 2 miles. Take you pick.
Mother nature had other plans for our excursion. We started at the south end and were twice put off the BRP because of winter storms. The drive down the side of the mountain from Mt. Pisgah was not fun. 4.2 miles of road for less than 2 miles of map and 1800+ feet vertical. The camp ground at Mt. Pisgah was not open because the crew had been out clearing the road. It was either drive back about twenty miles for a flatter exit or try this. DW was driving and if I had though about it, I probably could have checked the taillights on the way down.;)
It was 33°F when we got to Craggy Garden. We almost missed it in the fog. It is not so much a garden as a place to start a hiking adventure. Don't miss the Folk Art Center, Linville Falls (a bit of a hike) or Moses Cone. Mabry Mill was a disappointment because you can't see anything inside the mill works.
We are hoping to get to do the run again in better weather.
