There's nothing much I can add to what's already been said. So here goes: If you love long slow drives along the back roads of America then a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are about as good as it gets. But if you've got some of the itch in you to "get somewhere" then that 575 mile drive may seem a bit long to you. It comes down to what you know about yourself. There are those who feel that a long drive like that is "just more of the same mile after mile."
That said, we never get anywhere near that part of the country without doing the whole drive. What's probably our favorite trip when heading back east along a southern route is to pick up the Natchez Trace in Mississippi and follow it 440 miles up to the Nashville area.
From there we cut cross country on two lane local roads over to Cherokee, NC, to then pick up the B.R. Pkwy and Skyline Drive for a mountain drive of 575 miles. Those miles on the Trace and then following the mountain roads gives up over 1000 miles of slow, two-lane driving with beautiful scenery the whole way. And we get a bit sad nearing Front Royal at the northern end knowing the drive is almost over.
But there are some, I suppose, who would be near stark raving mad at all those slow miles. It comes down to what you prefer.
