Weird things happening in the US too. Here's a story about homeowner's associations taking people's houses and selling them because of unpaid dues . . . http://news.msn.com/in-depth/dollar288-in-unpaid-fees-homeowner-association-took-her-home . . . How they can do this I do not know. You think there would be a law. But apparently this has happened in several states.

Its not weird at all.
When you buy a home in an HOA you are given documentation and a guideline of all the rules before you close on the buying of the house. You then sign a paper stating that you read the rules and agree to them. They disclose what the HOA fee is and WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DONT PAY. I'm not yelling at you, just emphasizing. Its no different than not paying your car payment or boat payment or RV payment or property taxes. They will repo the item. You have to pay the HOA fee.
She benefited all along because the HOA did what it set out to do, it maintained the neighbor hoods condition according to the rules imitated between the state and the HOA when established. The HOA isn't just a bunch of neighbors getting together over coffee, its legal. I'm sure it would seem just as shocking as you reading about me or anyone else not paying the payment on my truck and you seeing me in the news having had lost my truck to the repo man/auction for $482.91 You would say what the heack is wrong with that guy? Why would he quit paying. Just an example but its no different. You could lose your house for back taxes. Same deal. It is what it is.
