That US Customs Agents are more gruff than their Canadian counterparts is a generalization that I have not found to be true. Even when searched (twice by Canadians, once by Americans) I've found the agents to be thoroughly professional and courteous on both sides of the border. I was once advised by a US agent that I could not take an apple back into the US, so I ate the evidence.
My British Bride purchases a lot of Canadian and British foods in Canada that we can't get in the US. I keep a list of quantities and prices, as well as a list of all other souveniers and purchased items.
I also list all meats, fruits and produce we may have. If asked, I hand these lists to the agent. Only once have I had to get rid of a vegetable - potato - that was unpeeled. Surprised me that spuds were on the list. Couldn't eat the evidence this time.
