Branson or not?

I realize it's a matter of opinion, but just wondering about Branson. We will be passing through Missouri in April going home from the Southwest back to Michigan. Never been to Branson and might stop in for a show or two. My impression is that it is so expensive and tourist-trappy. Do you think it's worth the stop for some bluegrass or similar music? We generally enjoy smaller venues than I think we'll find here.

Anything more in the natural category in the area? The Branson website lists caves to see but even they sound co-opted or owned by the tourism machine.

Campground suggestions for a fifth wheel? Like something with a more back-to-nature vibe if available.

Thanks for comments.
  • We loved Branson so much last year that we made camping reservations to return this year. Make your show reservations early as they book up quickly.
  • Personally, I think Branson is now a "has been." We got up and left from two shows because it was just that bad! Go if you want, but expect less than "prime time" entertainment.
  • Touristy? Certainly.
Expensive? Shows are not cheap but not outrageous. RV parks are not out of line either. We like the KOA near the strip. But many prefer the campgrounds on the various lakes.
Good shows? Lots to fit most any taste. Google Branson shows.
Smaller venues? These are not overly large theaters. The ones I have been in I would consider small to medium at best. And can generally get good seats down close.
  • Was there last year. The Goodsam campground is great and close to town. Go see the Six Show and be amazed. There is a lot of tourist stuff you can ignore. Trout fishing as at the camp is very good. Would definetly go.
