We are heading north from Montana into British Columbia for about a 2 week trip, just wondering around enjoying the Northern Rockies. Our general destination is Jasper Park, though we are looking for any tips or advice on things to see and do that you might recommend in and around the central / east area of BC. We are perhaps typical truck campers: prefer to avoid large crowds, no commercial camp grounds, and looking for interesting sights or activities. If you like good wine, check out the Okanogen valley region. Typically the best weather in BC plus around 200 wineries to visit.

Don't know about the middle area of BC but here on the West coast its starting to be one of the betterSalmon run in years. Catching fish everywhere. Check the Vancouver area out. go north lots of fishingand great scenery. Actually saw a black bear yesterday here on the island.

If you come up into BC on Highway 93 from Kalispell area, the Kootenay region from the border north to Highway 1 offers Lots to see and do, hot springs, scenery, the start of the Columbia River, etc.Head west on highway 1 to The Revelstoke area that is beautiful this time of year, especially the wild flowers on the meadows in Mt. Revelstoke National Park. Continue onto the west thru Salmon Arm and the Shuswap or head south to the Okanagan as suggested by others. You can head north on the Gold rush trail from Cache Creek north to Prince George where you will find many small lakes, etc. that may satisfy your fishing urge.From Prince George than head east back to Jasper on the Yellowhead Highway via Mt. Robeson, a great provincial park and campground there.after Jasper come south on the parkway to Lake Louise and then into Banff if you so choose.In this area monitor any road damages, washouts, closures, etc. due to the recent Alberta flooding.Have a great trip.m

I'm surprised, we cross eggs all the time, it has never been questioned. It's always no citrus, no fresh veggies and no firewood. :E

This is a good site.

Remember that when you are coming into BC that they have a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables that will be in season, and with the exchange will be better to buy as you need to then to haul a lot.

Border crossing information for those carrying food is at best a******shoot. Whatever anyone says has probably changed and whatever is posted on a website..Cdn OR US is subject to change as well. And rest assured, you don't want the Ag kids getting mad at you for bringing in a verboten item. It's a border crossing and it's all serious buiness.

The very best plan is to take nothing. If you have nothing, there is no question about can/can't. Shopping is easily done once you have crossed and yes, some products are pricier in Canada. You can always buy a liter of likker for each person in the vehicle or a dozen beer per person and bring that. If you have pets, ensure that all pet food is marked as Made in US when you head south.

Slightly off topic, but one more (hopefully final) question:
Do you have any tips on what is restricted to take across the border into Canada, primarily related to food? I've reviewed the website regulations, but any tips would be appreciated. We are currently planning on taking the typical foods, meats, vegetables, apples, etc.

There is a walk in campgroung at Takakkaw Falls. At the start of that road is Kicking Horse campground, the main campground in Yoho. We had to use the 'overflow' area in September. A con (or possibly pro) is that the railroad climbs through the spiral tunnels right above the campground.

In Banff/Jasper the more remote, rustic campgrounds are strung out along the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper.

Try Rocky Mountain House area Alberta just before Jasper park entrance.
All kinds of boon docking areas with great views of lakes and mountains and Helo rides in same area into the Rockies that I and my DW just loved.

A point of caution about Takakkaw Falls. The road has one set of tight switchbacks. Vehicles longer than 7m are told to back up (or down) the short middle leg (in the style of narrow gauge railway switchbacks)
