Just my 2cents worth, we made this trip through Jasper, Ice fields, & stopped at a couple of the Hot Springs. Loved the scenery, but were disappointed in the lack of camp grounds in Alberta. It just seemed to us that once you got into the Provincial Parts, you weren't allowed to just "pull off" & rough camp it. ...
Jasper, Ice Fields etc, are in the Canadian National Parks. They aren't any more restrictive about 'dispersed camping' than the US Nat Parks (e.g. Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades, Yellowstone). Even the BC Provincial Parks, you can must use established campgrounds.
In the USA, the Nat Forests and BLM generally allow 'dispersed camping'. That too is allowed, to one degree or other, in BC and Alberta forest lands. In BC there are a many rustic 'rec sites', some with an operator to collect fees, others free and 'user maintained'.
There are lots of camping options in AB to the east of the Nat Parks. But you do have to dig for the information; it won't be handed to you on a platter when you buy your day pass in the Nat Parks.
If you want to use the 'rec sites' get the Musio Backroads Mapbooks. There are multiple volumes for BC and for AB. There's a special volume for the Rockies parks.
