From Kamloops, Rt 5 is a nice drive all the way to the junction with 16. That's the most direct route to Jasper. Along that way look into stopping at Wells Gray Prov. Park (great waterfalls, back country lakes). We saw someone fly fishing in the Clearwater River at the campground near its headwaters at Clearwater Lake.
Rt 24 is possible, however it has a good climb right at the start, as it leaves the Thompson River valley and climbs to the lake country plateau. Lots of fishing resorts on the lakes along 24 and 97 north (Cariboo country).
97 from Kamloops is also possible. This passes through drier country.
On the drive south from Jasper, there are 2 options for leaving Alberta:
TCH 1 from Lake Louise into Yoho NP (look up its sights). The route through Kickinghorse Canyon to Golden is new.
Or 93 from Banff NP into Kootenay NP. Meets 95 at Radium (Hot Springs).
One thing you miss with this loop is TCH 1 through Glacier Nat Park and Rogers Pass.
