MTBob; The advice you have received is great. Banff is very crowded at this time of year so I would suggest a stop at Lake Louise and a drive to Lake Louise and also to Morraine lake. Both busy but beautiful places. I would then head south via Kootenay National Park. Several forestry campgrounds West of Radium on the Horsethief creek road would avoid the commercialism of Radium though the Macleod meadows campground in Kootenay park is pretty quiet and not that far out of Radium. Check on line for campground conditions after the heavy rains event. Then south via HWY 95 through Kimberley. Interesting RR ride into an underground mining display and world class fly fishing on the St. Mary river. There is an outfitter in Kimberley who can take you out and also runs whitewater rafting. The Riverside campground out of Kimberley is very nice but it is commercial though not "cheek to jowl" commercial. On the way to Kimberley you could pop into Whiteswan lake for more good lake fishing if you have a boat. Small but busy campgrounds here (unserviced). Then head home via Waterton Lakes National park.
Enjoy your trip!
