Most fuel stations I've seen have some sort of sticker on the pumps indicating that a hold MAY be placed on your financial institution, and will give the potential maximum amount. There's usually another sticker that states that if paid inside, there is no hold, or a minimal hold, depending on the state. Don't know why there would be a difference, unless it has something to do with more fraud potential with a skimmer device at the pump versus going inside and probably using the EMV chip on one's card.
